Where did the phrase "kills without blinking an eye" come from?

In the early years of the Northern Song Dynasty, there was a military general named Cao Han. While leading his army past the Yuantong Template one day, General Cao decided to enter the temple and rest. Upon stepping in, he saw an old monk named Yuande sitting in meditation who did not even look up. After staring at the monk for a few minutes, General Cao still did not see the monk stand up and bow to him. This made him very angry. He said to Yuande, "Hey, old monk, have you ever heard of a general who kills without blinking an eye?"

Without lifting his eyes, the monk calmly said, "Have you ever heard of a monk who is not afraid of death?" Upon hearing that, General Cao immediately felt a deep respect for the old monk.

"Kills without blinking an eye" is an allusion derived from the dialogue between General Cao and monk Yuande. Later, this phrase was used more widely to describe the evilness of villains and murderers. From this passage, we can see that having the courage to put matters of life and death away when encountering ferocious coercion will not only help cease brutality, but also gain genuine respect from others.
