World-renowned Shen Yun kicked off its 2017 season in December. It is playing at Lincoln Center this week from January 11-15. A Sunday evening show was recently added due to overwhelming demand for tickets.
Over the weekend, audiences who saw this year's performance had the following feedback:
Minister Treasures Chinese Cultural Heritage in Shen Yun
Wayne Lee is a retired military doctor. He attended the performance by Shen Yun World Company at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on January 8.
“I feel a lot of emotion. It’s a part of my history. ... I’m very spiritual. I’m a Christian, I’m a reverend, I’m an ordained minister in a Catholic church, but I find the spirituality in my Chinese heritage is very special to me.
“[It doesn’t matter] what you worship. You worship something bigger than self, and [Shen Yun] is very spiritual, very, very spiritual, and I’m touched by that.”
“It’s powerful. It’s very important to me. How do I feel? I feel sometimes it’s really touching to me. It almost brings me to tears it’s so powerful.”
“I was just thinking tonight being here, I've got to bring all my children and my grandchildren—I've got to bring them to this. They've got to see this part of their heritage. My wife is French, and a big part of our life is French also and we don't ignore that, but we must not ignore this either, where we come from.”
Scientist Touched by Shen Yun’s Portrayal of Tolerance
Evan Mills is a Senior Scientist at UC Lawrence Lab. He saw the performance by Shen Yun New York Company at San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House on January 8.
“Very uplifting, very beautiful, and it’s so saddening that they cannot perform in China. It’s a tragic commentary on humanity.”
“What impresses me is the variety, and the different performing arts, the voice and the instruments and the movement. The breadth of it, the range of it, is so impressive.”
Shen Yun 'Culturally Inspiring'
Speech therapist Linda Diamond attended by performance by Shen Yun International Company at Miami's Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts on January 8.
"I thought it was visually stunning. I love the traditional part of it. I love the history, I love the explanation, and I love how multi-talented [the dancers are] to be able to use the fans, scarves, the umbrellas, and the drums. And the coordination among the dancers was breathtaking. And there was humor too! It was fantastic, gorgeous. Never saw anything like it."
"It’s visually stunning, historically interesting, and culturally inspiring."
